The History of Holy Cross

Late 1980s: A group of committed Christians meet in each other's homes for worship and Bible study. Some services are held at the Diocesan House on St. Alban's Drive in North Raleigh.

January 1991: CHC is recognized as a mission congregation of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina. Thirty-four people attend the first official CHC service at Washington Elementary School.

November 1991: CHC holds its first service at Jenkins United Methodist Church on North Boylan Avenue. The congregation at first meets in the fellowship hall but eventually moves to the sanctuary.

January 1992: The Rev. John W. Gibson Jr. officiates for the first time as vicar of the church.

August 1992: CHC adds its first staff member, music director Linda Bang.

1993–1994: The church hires a lay assistant to the vicar and an administrative assistant.

January 1995: After reporting more than 100 confirmed members, CHC is elevated to parish status within the diocese.

July 1996: The church hires its first children's ministry leader.

May 1998: A youth ministry director is hired.

September 1999: The vestry approves “A Vision for the Church of the Holy Cross.”

June 2001: The church takes its first missionary trip out of the country when the youth group works in Matamoros, Mexico.

2002: CHC moves to its current location at 2301 West Millbrook Road in Raleigh.

March 2005: CHC affiliates with the Diocese of North Kigezi in the Anglican Province of Uganda. Our Primate is The Most Reverend Dr. Henry Luke Orombi, Archibishop of Uganda. Our Bishop is The Right Reverend Edward Muhima, Ph.D., Bishop of North Kigezi.

October 2005: The playground, our first building project, is completed.
